How many horsepower does a 5.9 Cummins motorhome have?
Your HP is regulated by the transmission. I have a 270 hp Cummins 5.9 and my 5 speed tranny is nearly maxed out. No wiggle room left. I’d seriously suggest you drive this MH with a tow before plopping down the cash…I don’t think you have enough engine for the MH by itself much less with a 4000 lb toad. YMMV Gene, You have a 5.9 IBT don’t you.
Which is better a Cummins 8.3 or 5.9?
The 5.9 is a great little engine that can be boosted/chipped for more HP/torque but it does it at much higher RPM’s than a 8.3. BUT, are you going to be able to use that extra HP without overheating on a long pull and have you overloaded the Allison tranny? There is a lot of difference between a 36′ MH and a 40′ MH.
How do you increase the HP of a Cummins Engine?
HP is increased by increasing the fuel input. The advice so far is right on. I believe your engine predates the Cummins “53” block issues. Go under your MH and look. The 53 shows up in large raised numerals. If it is a 53 block I would not increase the HP. The issue is that some of the walls are too thin and can crack under stress.
Can a 5.9 MH pull a 7k load?
A 5.9 in a 40′ MH pulling a 7K load is going to be a slug, even in a older MH without the extra weight of a slide, tile, and a big tool box. NOW a older 36′ (not as heavy as newer ones) pulling a 4K load with a mild HP increase will be fine. Also most MH’s with a 5.9 will only have a hitch rated for 5K, some only 3K.
