How to troubleshoot a fifth wheel landing gear problem?
I’m troubleshooting a landing gear problem on a fifth wheel. When I extend the landing gear the motor seems to make a skipping sound and has a hard time raising the trailer. I’m trying to determine if there is a gear box problem or a motor problem. I believe the legs are not bent, and there is no rear end jacks down.
How to tell the brand of an Atwood coach?
Are there any specific features that would help me determine the brand. Atwood legs usually have a large “A” on the cap on top of the legs. Sometimes you can tell from the measurements. If the coach will lift with the crank and not the motor I suspect the clutch mechanism at the end of the motor.

What to do about broken fifth wheel landing leg?
I surmised that a small metal pin needed to be punched out to get the ball rolling sort of speak. Sure enough, once I punched out the pin on the top beveled gear and another below the larger lower beveled gear, the rest of the mechanism could be easily taken apart exposing the long worm gear.
How did I get my landing leg out of my truck?
Luckily I was still hooked to the truck so I set to work removing the faulty landing leg to try and determine the issue. Removing the trailers landing leg was pretty straight forward involving undoing just a few bolts, its foot pad and locking pin assembly. In no time I had the whole leg out.
