How to wire a trailer brake controler in a Subaru Forester?

Do you need trailer brakes on a Subaru?
My local Subaru dealership tells me that these cars are not supposed to use trailer brakes and that they can tow 2,700lbs without it, the manual says trailer brakes are REQUIRED over 1,000 lbs and that ELECTRIC trailer brakes are recommended.
Where does the trailer brake controler plug in?
I.E. does the controller plug into an under dash subaru plug and where would I tap into the electrical system to hook up the round plug at the rear of the vehicle I believe the trailer will be delivered with a seven prong round plug. thanks for the help.
