What was the problem with my fifth wheel?
The passenger side landing jack on our Keystone Cougar fifth wheel suffered a major failure last week. I was in the process of jacking the trailer off the truck when I heard and felt a loud clunk. This is a normal occurrence. In the same way, any jack – even a manual hand-crank type – requires less power (or force) when lowering the trailer than when lifting it. The cause for your powered landing gear losing steam could be any of several possibilities.

Where to buy new fifth wheel landing legs?
We stopped in at a nice RV park called Maverick Ranch in Lajitas, Texas, leaving the truck hooked up and I ordered up some new legs from Etrailer.com. I had used them in the past and was very pleased with their parts quality and customer service. They had replacements in stock from Stromberg Carlson priced at $134 each.

I’m trying to determine if there is a gear box problem or a motor problem. I believe the legs are not bent, and there is no rear end jacks down.

Can a 5th wheel be lifted by the frame?
Although the official LCI position is to lift only by the frame, many RV techs lift only one wheel at a time by jacking under the U bolts with a block of wood between the top of the jack and the U bolts. Why not use the jacks to raise one side of the 5th wheel. That would get both wheels off the ground.
